Split peas are especially supportive for balancing kapha, which is associated with the earth and water elements. Light and drying in nature, they can help counter excess heaviness and moisture in the body, such as water retention, congestion, and sluggishness.
This nourishing soup is particularly well-suited for the cool, damp months of spring—known in Ayurveda as kapha season. Warming spices like cumin, ginger, and turmeric help kindle agni, or digestive fire, supporting healthy digestion and overall balance.
Enjoy this soup alongside a balance of augmenting and extracting vegetables to create a fully satisfying meal, or add them directly to the pot while it simmers. Sweet potatoes (augmenting) and kale (extracting) are two of my favorite additions, bringing both nourishment and color to this comforting dish.
