Neti & Nasya: Clearing the Path for Breath and Balance
Have you ever been in a yoga class, invited to take a deep breath through your nose, and found it surprisingly difficult?
So many of us experience nasal congestion or inflammation that makes deep, easy breathing feel out of reach. Yet our breath is our prana — our life force. It carries vitality throughout the body, keeping energy flowing freely. When that flow becomes blocked, we often feel it as pain — physical, emotional, or even spiritual.
Two simple Ayurvedic self-care rituals that help restore this flow are neti and nasya. These gentle practices not only clear the nasal passageways and support respiratory health, but also calm the mind and soothe the nervous system. They are simple to do, yet deeply transformative for overall well-being.
My Experience with Neti and Nasya
Before I began these practices, I often felt “congested.” I thought it was allergies or sinus issues, but in truth, my nasal passages were simply inflamed — irritated by dust, pollutants, and a buildup of mucus. Once I introduced Neti and Nasya into my routine, that heaviness lifted. My breath felt open, my senses awakened, and I could finally experience the full rhythm of my breath again.
A Simple Morning Ritual
Prepare Your Space: Choose a quiet time — ideally after your morning shower and before breakfast.
Begin with Neti: Warm filtered water and mix in a pinch of non-iodized neti salt in your neti pot.
Lean forward over a sink, tilt your head slightly, and gently pour the solution through one nostril, allowing it to flow out the other. Use half the water for each side.
Dry Gently: Let any remaining water drain out naturally and blow your nose softly into a tissue.
Apply Nasya Oil: Warm your nasya oil slightly (place the bottle in a cup of warm water).
Tilt your head back and place 2–3 drops in each nostril. Take a deep breath in, and lightly massage around the nose and sinuses to help the oil absorb.
Just a few mindful minutes each morning can help you begin the day breathing clearly, calmly, and fully.
Recommended Tools
If you’re new to these practices, start with simple, high-quality tools:
Neti Pot: Ceramic or stainless steel is best. The Himalayan Chandra and Baraka Neti Pot are both excellent choices.
Neti Salt: Choose a fine, non-iodized blend such as Ancient Secrets Nasal Cleansing Salt or pure Himalayan salt.
Nasya Oil: Opt for organic, herbal blends. I love Banyan Botanicals Nasya Oil — it’s aromatic, gentle, and balancing for most people.
A Note of Care
Skip neti and nasya if you’re feeling congested, have an active sinus infection, or right before bedtime. Morning is ideal — especially before stepping out into the cool, dry air of autumn and winter.
The Beauty of the Breath
These small acts of self-care help us reconnect with the rhythm of our breath — the bridge between body, mind, and spirit. When we breathe freely, energy flows freely.
I hope these rituals bring you the same sense of clarity, balance, and ease that they have brought me.
Here’s to breathing fully and living gently. 🌬️
