As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, Ayurveda encourages us to invite more cooling practices into our daily lives. One simple and delicious way to do this is through Hibiscus Ginger Tea.
Hibiscus is naturally cooling and is often used in Ayurveda to help balance excess pitta, the dosha associated with heat, intensity, and transformation. Its bright red color and tart flavor make it both refreshing and satisfying during the warmer months.
A small amount of fresh ginger adds a gentle digestive quality without creating excessive heat. Together, hibiscus and ginger create a balanced tea that supports digestion while helping the body feel refreshed and hydrated.
This tea is especially supportive if you tend to experience signs of excess heat such as:
Feeling hot or overheated
Irritability or frustration
Inflammation
Heartburn or acid reflux
Excessive thirst
Skin sensitivity or breakouts
Enjoy it warm, at room temperature, or slightly chilled on a hot summer day.
2 cups water
1 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers
3–4 thin slices fresh ginger
1–2 teaspoons maple syrup or jaggery (optional)
Bring the water to a boil.
Add the hibiscus flowers and ginger.
Reduce heat and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
Remove from heat and allow to steep for an additional 5 minutes.
Strain into a pitcher or teapot.
Sweeten if desired once the tea has cooled slightly.
Garnish with fresh mint for an extra cooling touch.
When balancing pitta, remember that cooling doesn't mean cold. Ice-cold drinks can weaken digestion and dampen agni (digestive fire). Instead, enjoy beverages at room temperature or lightly chilled to support both digestion and balance.
May this simple tea help you stay cool, refreshed, and at ease throughout the summer season.
